about Jamuna Bridge (Present Bangabandhu Bridge)

The 4.8 km length Bangabandhu Multipurpose Bridge (11th longest bridge in the world) was constructed by Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. JV (South Korea), and was completed and opened to traffic on 23 June 1998. The crossing assembly of the bridge was built up with pre-stressed concrete box girder.

A total of 47 spans of 99.375 m each and 2 end spans of 64.69m each are supported on 50 nos. of pier supports, which in turn are supported by two or three large diameter steel tubular raked piles. The main bridge has been connected to the east and west approach road ramps through the viaducts. The viaducts are 120m long continuous framed structure connected to the main bridge by 8.0m span transition slabs. The 18.50m wide main bridge and viaduct superstructure accommodates a 2-lane dual carriageway and a dual gauge train line with requisite dividers among them.
